THE VICTIM

No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.

—ELEANOR ROOSEVELT

Victims of invalidators can be compelled to remain victims. Most of us, for example, have a strong reaction to someone shouting at us. As children we were (perhaps) trained to respond to a raised voice by doing what was demanded of us. Now when a person raises his or her voice, some of us are moved to propitiate and do what is asked to avoid discomfort. Others of us will rebel and shout back, attempting to avoid the discomfort of feeling forced into something we object to. Both reactions are indicative of people who have been victims in the past. We learned how to dysfunctionally deal with such situations and find ourselves similarly reacting in similar situations.
